An ECBHM Residency Programme is a training programme that has been approved by the Education and Residency Committee (E&RC) allowing a graduate veterinarian (the Resident) to acquire in-depth knowledge of bovine health management and its supporting disciplines under the supervision and guidance of one or more Diplomate(s) of the ECBHM.
Two types of Residency Programmes can be carried out: a Standard Residency Programme or an Alternative residency Programme (see below).
To be admitted to carry out a Residency Programme, prospective residents will be required to have broad training and experience in clinical bovine health management and their supporting disciplines, which must be attained by participation in a one to one-and-a-half years internship, or its equivalent, as approved by the Education and Residency Committee (E&RC).
A Standard Residency Programme (SRP) is carried out only in an approved institution, and consists of a minimum of 3 years of full-time, supervised training. This is the shortest route to qualify for examination.
Full details are provided in the updated ECBHM Policies and Procedures.
An Alternative Residency Programme (ARP) should be equivalent to 3 years of a full-time SRP. The total duration of an ARP must not exceed 6 years.
An ARP may be undertaken in two ways:
-
At a non-approved institution (full-time or part-time), provided that supervision is ensured by an ECBHM Diplomate (Primary Supervisor). For example, this may involve employment in a bovine practice under the supervision of an ECBHM Diplomate, combined with a series of structured specialist training modules delivered by external institutions.
-
At an approved training institution on a part-time basis.
Full details are provided in the updated ECBHM Policies and Procedures.
